Year: 2022
Presented at: Antiracist Film Days
Location: Norra Skåne

Hijab: Between Oppression and Freedom is a performance-lecture combining sound, body, and conceptual photography. The work examines the hijab as a complex and contested symbol — shaped by context, power structures, and personal choice.

Developed as part of the Antiracist Film Days in southern Sweden, the performance explores how the same symbol can signify both freedom and oppression. Through live sound and movement, accompanied by a series of conceptual photographs, the work addresses tensions around visibility, gender, cultural identity, and self-definition.

The project reflects on belonging, racism, and discrimination, emphasizing the political nature of everyday symbols. The audience is invited to listen, reflect, and confront their own assumptions, positioning the performance as a space for critical dialogue rather than fixed answers.
