Public Responses – Collective Voices and Afterlives of an Act
Collage / Installation
Artist: Areej Almansory

Exhibited at: Staffanstorp Konsthall
Public Responses is a collage-based installation that brings together written messages sent by members of the public following the circulation of a documentary film. Rather than focusing on the original act, the project centers on the voices that emerged afterward.
The work is conceptually connected to the documentary film Skillnaden stavas rasism, produced by a Swedish anti-racist activist. The film was created in response to the public reactions that followed a spontaneous public gesture, and focuses on the social responses it provoked rather than the gesture itself. Through its circulation in different contexts, the film became a carrier of public discourse and opened space for dialogue and reflection.
The installation is composed of fragments of messages expressing care, support, and solidarity. These texts are layered with repeated photographic elements, transforming private reactions into a shared visual language. By shifting attention from the individual artist to collective presence, Public Responses foregrounds listening as a central artistic gesture.
The project reflects on how public engagement can reshape meaning over time, allowing an individual act to evolve into a collective narrative shaped by response, dialogue, and connection.
